The Arc Southwest Ohio will cease operating on March 23rd after 65+ years. The Arc Southwest Ohio, non-profit human rights organization that has been promoting equal opportunities for people with developmental disabilities, was founded in 1947. The organization was one of the first such chapters in the United States and has, as an independent organization, long been at the forefront of the struggle for the deinstitutionalization of people with developmental disabilities and for their full participation in our communities. The Arc's product has always been advocacy on behalf of individuals with developmental disabilities, their families, and caregivers.
For the last 27 years The Arc conducted a social enterprise which helped to generate unrestricted funds for that purpose. With the advent of regionalism many fo the functions The Arc had performed are now being taken into county governments. The Arc Board has for nearly two years evaluated the organization's capacity to replace those funds and its long-term sustainability. The Board of The Arc has made the difficult decision to close its doors. It challenges the community to recognize its own diversity and include individuals with developmental disabilities as it plans for its future and dedicates its resources.
The Arc is part of a national movement that has impacted both individual lives and public policy. For ongoing resources and supports one can contact The Arc Ohio www.thearcofohio.org or The Arc National www.thearc.org
